On September 22, 2017, Los Angeles Filmforum launches Ism, Ism, Ism: Experimental Cinema in Latin America (Ismo, Ismo, Ismo: Cine Experimental en América Latina). Ism, Ism, Ism is an unprecedented, five-month film series —the first in the U.S.—that surveys Latin America’s vibrant experimental production from the 1930s through today. Revisiting classic titles and introducing recent works by key figures and emerging artists, Ism, Ism, Ism takes viewers on a journey through a wealth of materials culled from unexpected corners of Latin American film archives. Ism, Ism, Ism's multi-part screening series features key works of experimental, time-based media made in Latin America and by Latin American artists. The exhibition will take place as a series of sixteen curated screenings, and several single-guest shows hosted in a combination of screening venues, museums, galleries and community spaces located throughout Southern California. Screenings will take place from September 2017 until January 2018. Details on programs and information for tickets may be found at ismismism.org
Ism, Ism, Ism is the first major exhibition in the United States to include a broad range of experimental cinema from Latin America and introduces U.S. audiences to a selection of rare cinematic masterworks in combination with resources that will help audiences better understand and discuss these films’ history and aesthetics. Many of the works in the series are largely unknown in the United States and most screenings will include national and area premieres. To make this project possible, Filmforum has collaborated iwth scholars and curators in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay, San Francisco, and Switzerland.
Ism, Ism, Ism is part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles.
Lead support for Ism, Ism, Ism is provided through grants from the Getty Foundation.
