About Us
Mission
Filmforum was incorporated in 1975 to promote a greater understanding of film as an art form and the filmmaker as an artist by providing a forum for independently produced, experimental films, which have little opportunity of reaching the general public through normal channels of commercial distribution.
Presenting approximately 45 screenings annually, Filmforum is currently the only venue in Southern California dedicated exclusively to the ongoing, non-commercial exhibition of independent, experimental, and progressive cinema.
Filmforum showcases alternative media that aims to inspire, enlighten, and empower, as well as to entertain. By featuring the underrepresented voices and visions of truly independent filmmakers, Filmforum exposes audiences to the full range of artistic expression, cultural perspectives, and critical inquiry.
Filmforum facilitates cross-cultural dialogue by collaborating with other arts organizations to bring alternative media into traditionally underserved communities and to bring work from those communities to its regular venue. This geographically-diverse, multi-site programming also encourages shared audiences among arts organizations.
Filmforum encourages the production of diverse independent media art. Through its eclectic series of in-person screenings and workshops, Filmforum provides the inspiration, models, and information necessary for the production and distribution of new work by local and emerging artists. Filmforum champions the dual imperatives of aesthetic and cultural diversity as necessary components for 1) enriching the art form and 2) assuring inclusive, democratic participation in social discourse.
Filmforum provides valuable exposure for local artists. Its First Sight Scene series features new work by artists in the formative stages of their careers, in a format highlighting new ideas and aesthetics emerging in our evolving city. Retrospectives of work by major figures in the history of alternative media are complimented by thematically-based programs combing works of all generations.
When Filmforum’s first screening took place in an Altadena living room in November of 1975, organized by Terry Cannon, alternative media was at one of its aesthetic, technological, and social high points. Bruce Baillie, Stan Brakhage, James Broughton, Joseph Cornell, Chick Strand, Sara Katherine Arledge, and James Whitney, to name a few, were expanding the boundaries of film. Nam June Paik was exploring the first video synthesizer and multi-media had emerged from the relative primitivity of the 1960s, spawning a whole new interdisciplinary genre. A few visionary prophets were predicting such absurdities as shopping via television and videophones and, lurking in sci-fi cellars and the darker corners of academe, a handful of closeted geeks were whispering words like “cyberspace.”

A healthy membership base is crucial for an organization like FIlmforum. Buying a yearly membership gives you access to all of our screenings in that season for FREE ... once you’ve attended six screenings, the cost has paid for itself! Or save money by purchasing a double yearly membership which allows you to bring a guest to all shows.
Single Memberships get you in for free to our shows at the Egyptian and the Echo Park Film Center, while a Double membership gets in you plus one guest. Discounts for Filmforum are also given for our shows at the Silent Movie Theater (usually $4 off, depending on the show).
Single (Yearly): $60
Double (Yearly): $95
TO BECOME A MEMBER: Download the membership form here and send it via email (if you pay your membership fees via PayPal), mail or fax. Or bring it to the next screening you attend.

**NOTE** Due to increased financial pressure, Filmforum is working on a new rate structure for memberships that will increase the cost for new memberships only, effective in January 2010. All current memberships - as well as memberships purchased through the end of 2009 - will be honored at the original rate and terms.
As a non-profit, Los Angeles Filmforum can serve as fiscal sponsor for independent, non-commercial films – experimental and documentaries. We are currently the fiscal sponsor for several worthy projects. Click here for full details on all the projects we are currently sponsoring, and to learn how you can contribute to each.
Filmforum is almost entirely organized and run by volunteers. Please support our efforts to present the best in experimental, non-commercial film and video to Los Angeles.
Filmforum is a a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is always strapped for funds. All of your fiscal donations are fully tax deductible. Here are some ways we could use your support:
Season Sponsorship ($5000): An entire season of Filmforum programming is indeed an incredible valuable donation. Each season features approximately 12-14 shows including special events and co-presentations with other venues. If you sponsor a season of Filmforum shows, we will feature your individual or company name on the season page (see our archives for examples of season pages) and each individual show listing, and will also announce your generous support of Filmforum at every screening. In addition, you will be granted a complimentary one year membership and will be granted special access to any special events. Come early to the shows and we will introduce you to the filmmaker!
Screening Sponsorship ($500): This level of sponsorship will sponsor one particular screening. If you would like to speak to us about what upcoming screenings we have for this or upcoming seasons, please contact Adam Hyman for details. If you sponsor a screening, we will feature your individual or company name on the screening listing on our website, on our fliers and all other publicity material, and will announce your generous support of Filmforum at the screening itself. In addition, you will be granted a complimentary one year membership which includes free admission to all shows!
